Your guinea pigs cage is where they spend most of their lives, so it's essential to build a safe, appropriate enclosure with their specific needs in mind. Guinea pigs have unique husbandry requirements that differ from many other small pets, and getting the setup right from the start will save you (and your pigs) a lot of trouble down the road.
There's more to a good cage than floor space alone. Indoor enclosures need proper ventilation, safe flooring, a stable environment, and protection from common household hazards. The cage should also be practical to clean and easy to access for daily care. Below, we'll walk through each of these factors in detail.
DIY or Store-Bought?
Whether to buy a store-bought cage or make your own ultimately comes down to space, budget, and comfort with building things. Here's how the two options generally compare:
DIY cages (like C&C cages)
- Pros:
- Fully customizable size, making it much easier to meet or exceed recommended minimum space requirements
- Generally more affordable per square foot than premade cages, especially at larger sizes
- Easy to expand or reconfigure later if your guinea pigs' needs change or you add more pigs
- Full control over materials, so it's easier to ensure solid flooring and open sides for proper airflow
- Cons:
- Requires some upfront planning and assembly, though most designs are simple enough for beginners
- Materials (coroplast, cubed wire grids, connectors) need to be sourced, which can take extra time compared to buying a cage outright
Store-bought cages
- Pros:
- Ready to use immediately, with no assembly skills or extra planning required
- Can be a convenient option for owners short on time or DIY experience
- Cons:
- Come in fixed sizes, and many popular pet-store models fall short of the space guinea pigs actually need
- Ventilation varies by design — some premade cages use solid-walled or tote-style construction that can trap ammonia, so it's worth checking a cage's design against the ventilation guidance below before buying
- Fixed size and shape make them harder to expand or reconfigure later
Whichever route you choose, prioritize the same core fundamentals: ample airflow, solid flooring, and a single flat level.
Cage Design
Ventilation
Guinea pigs produce a lot of waste, making proper ventilation and airflow essential in their enclosures. Without adequate airflow, ammonia from urine can quickly rise to unsafe levels, increasing the risk of serious health conditions like upper respiratory infections and pneumonia.
Never house guinea pigs in aquariums, plastic storage totes, or any enclosure with four solid walls. These habitats trap humidity and moisture, which concentrates ammonia fumes and creates a dangerous environment. An open top alone does not provide enough airflow, since wet ammonia (e.g. urine) sinks below regular air and lingers near your guinea pigs.
Solid Sides
Some owners install higher panels along the back of their cage to keep hay from getting trapped between the cage and the wall. This is fine as long as the other sides remain open and provide adequate airflow. Solid walls become unsafe when used on more than two sides of the enclosure, as they restrict ventilation and increase the risk of harmful ammonia buildup.
We generally recommend wire grids over plastic ones. If you do use plastic grid panels along the back, keep in mind that they're flimsy and can't be zip tied together. When positioning the cage against a wall, the solid side should face the wall. Placing the wire grids against the wall renders them useless, since this blocks the airflow grids are meant to provide.
Flooring
Guinea pigs need a solid cage floor. Never use a wire bottom cage. Wire flooring is an outdated husbandry practice. Wire bottoms will rust and become difficult to keep clean over time, and standing on them causes pressure sores that can lead to serious staph infections and pododermatitis.
The solid floor should cover the entire bottom of the cage. Good options include corrugated plastic (Coroplast®), linoleum, or solid wood covered with a tarp or shower liner.
Multiple Levels
Additional levels are optional, and do not count toward minimum cage size requirements. Not every guinea pig will use them—many guinea pigs ignore ramps or second levels because they find it difficult or frightening, and elderly, sick, injured, or mobility-impaired guinea pigs are especially likely to avoid them.
If you add a second level, guinea pigs should be able to walk to it using a wide, gradual ramp. Don't encourage or require hopping, jumping, climbing, or strenuous movement. Avoid ladders, steep ramps, narrow shelves, mesh platforms, and exposed drops.
Food and water must always be available on the main level. Guinea pigs should never need to climb or use a ramp to reach essential resources.
Second levels can create bottlenecks and cramped spaces that may cause fighting. Make sure guinea pigs can pass each other easily and that the second level does not block access to food, water, hideys, or other important areas.
If you do add a second level:
- Prevent falls. Use secure sides or barriers around all exposed edges.
- Use solid, non-slip ramps with sides. This helps prevent guinea pigs from slipping, catching a foot, or pushing each other off.
- Keep ramps gradual and wide. Guinea pigs struggle with steep ramps and should be able to walk up them rather than climb; ramps and entrances shouldn't become bottlenecks.
- Keep the upper level spacious. A tiny platform may cause conflict if only one guinea pig can use it at a time.
Lids
A lid is not always required for guinea pigs, since they are not agile climbers. Cage sides that are 14 inches high are generally enough to keep them contained. However, a lid is important in certain situations:
- Housing males and females together: a lid helps prevent unplanned visits (and litters) between separate cages. Males are very motivated to get to females and are known to climb cage walls to reach them, so a lid is especially important here.
- Other pets in the home: a lid helps protect your guinea pigs from cats, dogs, and other household predators.
- Young guinea pigs: they may attempt to climb, even though adults generally don't.
- Small children in the home: a lid helps keep kids from picking up or handling a guinea pig unsupervised, which can lead to accidental drops and injury.
Choose a wire or mesh lid, not a solid one. A solid lid blocks airflow and traps ammonia and moisture, just like solid cage walls do.
Separating Males and Females
Intact males and females should never be housed together—doing so will result in breeding. Even when housed in separate enclosures, those cages should never be positioned directly next to each other, since guinea pigs can still breed through the bars. Cages should be separated by several inches, as well as a visual barrier.
Housing intact males near females can cause fighting between the males, even if they cannot see the females—they will still hear and smell them, and this will cause fights. When keeping males and females in the same household, it's best to keep them in separate rooms to help prevent arguments between the male pairs.
The Right Environment
Choosing a Location
Where you place the cage matters just as much as how it's built. Pick a well-lit room within your home's regular living quarters, one with stable temperatures and good air circulation, and avoid direct sunlight.
A high-traffic area of the house is generally the best spot, since it gives your guinea pigs plenty of exposure to people and helps them adjust to your household routine. If there are other animals in the home, though, or you simply prefer it, a dedicated guinea pig room works well too—just make sure it's still a livable space, such as a bedroom, office, or den.
Areas to Avoid
A few room types are best avoided entirely:
- Closets or other small, enclosed rooms — prevent good airflow
- Basements — bring moisture, mold, flooding, and radon exposure
- Garages — tend to have poor insulation and can expose your guinea pigs to vehicle fumes
- Attics — tend to have poor insulation and ventilation, leading to extreme temperature swings
Temperature
Guinea pigs thrive in warm, stable environments. It's important to keep the room within a safe range year-round, with proper heating, cooling, and air circulation:
- Ideal range: 68-76°F (20-24°C)
- Below 45°F (7°C): risk of freezing to death
- Above 79°F (27°C): risk of heat stroke
Cold drafts and temperature fluctuations can compromise your guinea pig's health and lead to illness, so avoid placing the enclosure near windows or along exterior walls of your home—these spots are more prone to drafts, as well as direct sunlight and overheating.
Never use heat lamps or heating mats in a guinea pig enclosure. Heat lamps can overheat or ignite nearby materials, while heating mats can cause burns and may melt or damage cage components. Guinea pigs may not recognize the danger or move away from a heat source quickly enough to prevent burns or other injuries. If your guinea pigs need additional protection from cold, provide plenty of hay and appropriate shelter rather than using a heat lamp or heating mat.
Humidity
Humidity is just as important to monitor as temperature, and guinea pigs need a room kept within roughly 30-50% humidity—the same range recommended for people. Use a hygrometer, or a thermostat/hygrometer combo, to track both temperature and humidity in the room; these devices are relatively inexpensive and make it easy to catch problems early.
Low humidity can dry out the airways and make guinea pigs more susceptible to respiratory infections, while high humidity contributes to mold growth and the same ammonia problems discussed under ventilation.
If you live in a dry climate, a humidifier can help bring humidity up into a safe range; in a moist environment, a dehumidifier can help bring it back down.
Household Hazards
Beyond ventilation and temperature, a few household risks also deserve special attention when setting up a guinea pig cage:
- Other pets: Cats, dogs, ferrets, and other household predators can pose a serious threat to guinea pigs, even if they seem friendly or well-behaved. Keep the cage in a location these animals can't access unsupervised, and consider a lid if other pets are present in the home (see the Lids section above).
- Toxic plants: Keep houseplants away from the cage, and be mindful of what's growing nearby if the cage is near a window or in a room with plants. Many common houseplants are toxic to guinea pigs, and leaves or clippings can easily fall into the enclosure.
- Chemicals, candles, and air fresheners: Guinea pigs have sensitive respiratory systems, so avoid using chemicals, candles, air fresheners, or essential oil diffusers near the cage. Fumes and scents that seem mild to people can irritate a guinea pig's airways or trigger respiratory issues over time.
- Toxic foods: Keep small children away from guinea pig cages, since they can drop toxic foods inside without realizing the danger—such as meat, bread, or garlic.
Electrical Equipment
Avoid placing electrical devices in or around guinea pig enclosures whenever possible. Guinea pig cages contain hay and other dry, combustible materials, which can ignite quickly. If a fire were to start in or near the enclosure, it could spread rapidly and leave little time to respond.
If electrical equipment is being used near guinea pig cages (such as lighting or cameras), follow these safety guidelines:
- Ensure your home is equipped with AFCI breakers to reduce the risk of electrical fires.
- Plug electronic devices directly into wall outlets whenever possible.
- Do not plug power strips into other power strips, as this creates a significant fire hazard.
- Replace smart plugs, lamps, and electrical accessories periodically to prevent failures due to wear or overheating.
- Avoid low-quality or inexpensive string lights, which may not meet safety standards and are more likely to overheat or fail.
- Cover wires so they cannot be chewed on. Electrical shocks are fatal!
Accessibility
A cage should be designed with daily care in mind. Every part of the enclosure should be within easy reach for spot cleaning, deep cleaning, health checks, and routine handling. Layouts with tight corners, narrow openings, or unnecessary barriers make it harder to keep the cage sanitary and harder to catch your guinea pigs when you need to.
With larger cages, some owners step directly into the enclosure to clean it. We don't recommend doing this while your guinea pigs are still inside. If you're in the cage, the animals shouldn't be. You can trip and easily crush a guinea pig, and animals can also run underfoot unexpectedly while you're sitting or kneeling. Going into the cage with your guinea pigs is always a risk and deserves caution; move them to a separate space is the only surefire way to prevent accidents.
